First Visit

A Focused Approach to Your Recovery

We want your first visit to be efficient, thorough, and comfortable. Our goal is to diagnose the root cause of your pain and create a personalized treatment plan..

What to Bring

To ensure your appointment runs smoothly, please arrive with the following:

  • Photo ID & Insurance Card: We need current copies on file for every patient.

  • Imaging on Disc (Crucial): If you have had an MRI, CT scan, or x-rays taken at another facility, please bring the actual CD/disc, not just the paper report. Dr. Wall will need to personally reviews images themselves to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Please note that more imaging, especially x-rays, is frequently required to get the correct views necessary to make a diagnosis. We may ask that you get new x-rays, even if they were recently obtained elsewhere, after we review them and determine if they’re adequate quality.

  • Referral Letter: If your insurance requires a referral, please ensure it has been faxed to our office or bring a physical copy.

  • Medical History: A list of all your known medical problems (diagnoses), including ones that are not related to orthopaedics.

  • Medication List: A complete list of your current medications and dosages.

  • Previous Surgical Records: If you have had prior surgery on or near your shoulder (including your neck, back, collarbone and elbow) operative reports are very helpful.

  • Anything else: If there is anything else that you might find helpful (images, videos, etc.), please feel free to bring them to your visit.

Our Pledge Regarding Your Time

We recognize that your time is valuable, and we make every effort to run on schedule.

However, Dr. Wall occasionally treats urgent injuries or complex cases that require extra attention. These situations can sometimes cause scheduling delays beyond our control. We appreciate your patience and promise to give you the same focused time and attention during your visit.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to reschedule, please contact our office at least 24 hours in advance. This allows us to offer your appointment time to another patient on our waiting list.

What to Wear

To perform a thorough examination, Dr. Wall needs to see the muscles and joint mechanics of your shoulder, shoulderblade (scapula) or elbow.

  • For Men: Please wear a t-shirt or tank top.

  • For Women: Please wear a tank top or sports bra under your shirt.

This usually allows Dr. Wall to examine your shoulder comfortably without requiring you to change into a gown. Gowns are availble for you to change in to, if you wish.

Traveling Patients

For patients traveling to Richmond from outside Virginia:

We understand the logistical challenges of traveling for medical care. We offer an expedited evaluation process to minimize your travel burden.

  • Remote Record Review: Before you book your flight, you may mail your imaging discs and records to our office for a preliminary review to ensure you are seeing the right specialist for your condition.

  • The "One-Stop" Visit: We strive to coordinate your physical exam, fresh X-rays, and treatment planning into a single visit.

  • Advanced Imaging: If Dr. Wall determines you need a new MRI or CT scan, we will make every effort to schedule it for the same day, though this depends on your insurance carrier’s authorization rules and local availability.

  • Surgery Scheduling: If surgery is recommended, it will be scheduled for a later date to allow for insurance authorization and travel planning.
